The Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Institute of Psychology) was established inIn 1951, it was formerly known as the Institute of Psychology of the Academia Sinica founded in 1929.

In 2015, the Institute of Psychology was one of the first batch of characteristic institutes that entered into the four categories of institutional reforms in the "First Action Plan" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.  

The Institute of Psychology is the support unit of the Key Laboratory of Mental Health of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Key Laboratory of Behavioral Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Genetic Psychology, Cognitive and Developmental Psychology, Social and Engineering Psychology3 laboratories, with The Chinese University of Hong Kong jointly established the Joint Laboratory of Biosocial Psychology.
